In 2013 Surface 604 produced a limited number of bikes called the Element, a fat-tire cruiser-style electric bike. At the time, the Element was one of the only production fat e-bikes on the market, and at under $2,000 USD, was by far the most affordable. Despite being an entry-level machine and our first design, the Element achieved what we had hoped. It made us realize that the combination of fat tires and electric assist doesn’t just work, it’s an absolute game-changer. Confident that we were on the right track, the team immediately set to work on designs for the next generation fat-tire ebike that would come to be known as the Boar.

Bringing our vision to life would become an epic project lasting almost two years. We started from the ground up, enlisting the help of Vancouver-based frame designer Jason Fear, a life-long rider with decades of bike design experience working with some of the biggest names in biking. Jason was stoked with our vision for the Boar and spent months with our team touring facilities in Asia, searching for the latest technologies and finding manufacturing partners who would share our vision and our passion, and help us to realize our goal of building the ultimate Sport Utility Bike (SUB) priced for the everyday rider. It turned out to be a monumental task to incorporate everything on our wish list – from the in-frame battery design to suspension fork compatibility, from robust cargo-carrying racks to the latest in torque-sensor technology. Jason agonized over every last detail, designing and redesigning, as perfectionists are apt to do.
“…the combination of fat tires and electric assist doesn’t just work, it’s an absolute game-changer.”
Like all great bikes, the Boar was designed by riders for riders. Our team has well over a century of road and mountain biking experience and has seen trends and gimmicks come and go. So when it came time to spec components, we went straight for some of the biggest, most respected names in the industry – SRAM, Kenda, FSA, Tektro, Bafang and RST – and together we assembled a spec sheet combining uncompromising performance with value. Designs and components would be tested across three continents and in some of the harshest conditions North America’s Pacific Northwest could throw at us, from the freezing winter snows of the Coast Mountain Range to the raw, wind-hammered beaches of the Pacific Ocean.
It was an unbelievable feeling to see the first prototypes roll out of the warehouse. There in front of us was the machine we’d spent thousands of hours creating. Suddenly, the reams of emails, the trips to the factory, the testing and re-testing all seemed worth it. The bike looked – and more importantly rode – better than we could have hoped. Incorporating latest generation technologies was worth the effort – the 1×10 SRAM transmission, the low-profile in-frame battery placement, hydraulic disc brakes and state-of-the-art torque sensor.
For the team at Surface 604, the Boar Project became an unmitigated success – a bomber all-season bike that takes anything you can throw at it; a bike with sexy lines and the nimble handling of a mountain bike; electric assist that’s uber-reliable with natural-feeling power delivery; accessories like racks and fenders that put the “utility” in Sport Utility like no other bike in its class.

For us, there was no question – the Boar had earned its place at the table with bikes costing twice as much. But the true test of success is when you, the rider, agrees that we’ve created the ultimate Sport Utility Bike. We happily accept the challenge.
“The Boar ranks among the most fun, sturdy and beautiful electric bikes I’ve tried in a long while. I think the Surface 604 team really nailed it with the new design.”

We know one size does not fit all when it comes to bicycles, and that’s why, behind the scenes, we’ve been busy developing our next contribution to the word of e-bikes. Focusing on the needs and wants of the daily commuter, we worked to perfect the design of bicycles providing quality, all the extra features needed for daily riding and for a great value.

And so, after months of hard work, we are proud to introduce the newest members of our fleet: the Rook and Colt.

We’ve combined the proven power of the BOAR with a lighter, more versatile frame, making the Rook and Colt well-equipped for daily commuters looking for some extra momentum to get them to work quickly, easily, and in comfort. Both bicycles include the power of a 500W, 48V battery to give riders the extra boost for that extra mile without breaking a sweat. Combined with a torque sensor and throttle on demand, the Rook and Colt are great for travelling longer distances, on a variety of grades.

We designed the frames Rook and Colt electric assist bicycles to cater to the diverse needs of riders. The Colt features a more traditional commuter style with a tall top tube. Meanwhile, the Rook boasts a more feminine frame, using a step-through design to make mounting and dismounting hassle-free no matter the outfit.

Commuters want no-fuss riding, so we built the Rook and Colt to be fully loaded with extra features needed to make riding effortless. The heavy-duty built-in rear rack easily holds all types of pannier bags, and the powerful front and rear LED lights feed off the main battery, meaning you’ll never have to worry about charging or replacing batteries at the end of a long day.
Since The Rook and Colt are built for year-round cycling, they come direct from the factory with front and rear fenders and a chain guard, keeping water, mud and grease off clothes and ensuring riders arrive fresh and mess-free. Both are equipped with hydraulic disk brakes, so that even in the slickest conditions, you can rest assured that the bikes can be trusted to handle the journey.

Of course we know that well-designed bikes must be comfortable. The Rook and Colt e-assist bicycles showcase an adjustable stem that can be fine-tuned on the fly for individual riding styles without the need for tools, as well as an SR Suntour XCT Suspension fork, because all roads are not created equal.

The battery for the Rook and Colt is placed discreetly in the down tube, assisting with better weight distribution, and even features a USB plug for charging mobile devices on the go.

One the most attractive features of the Rook and Colt e-bikes is the cost, with a price point of $1,899 USD. The Rook and Colt offer an incredible number of features and power, all for a price unmatched by similar bikes on the market.

We are continually focused on providing well-built, quality electric bicycles that get more people riding and enjoying the freedom of two wheels. The Rook and Colt offer just that – power, frame options and essential design features – all for an incredible value and making the daily commute easy, comfortable, and stress-free.
Our goal at Surface 604 is to always be providing you with well-designed, electric assist bicycles that make getting around on two wheels simple and enjoyable.
